William Wadd, blacksmith.  Slumped to the floor in his smithy, and was sat in a chair, but died in minutes.  Inquest verdict - heart disease, natural causes.

John Harrison: Died 28th December 1876:  On 24th December, a fire had been made in the kitchen by an elder brother who had then gone off to work.  John came downstairs, leaving his father in bed, and the next thing father knew was that John was racing upstairs with his nightshirt on fire.  His father removed the remains of the nightshirt, and applied some whiting to the wounds.  Mr Bennett, surgeon, saw the boy a few hours after the occurrence and approved of what father was doing, but had little hope for the boy.  He lingered on until 28th, and then died shortly before noon.  The inquest, and the funeral were held the following day.  The verdict was “accidental death.”

The Stamford Mercury on Friday 12th December 1879 that “the four deaths from diphtheria occurred in the parish of Winteringham, the last being on August 26th.  This would suggest that Herbert and Annie Berridge died of this illness, with two of the children who died shortly before them also contracting it.
