Winteringham's PC Kirk
in West End, in the mid 1950s

PC Kirk, West End, Mid-Fifties

Winteringham PC Kirk West End mid-1950s

PC Kirk (491) walks up West End.  The time was the mid to late 1950s, and with him wearing his ‘bush’ shirt (for which permission had to be sought), it was obviously high summer.  With the notorious British weather though, his police cape is strapped to his handlebars.

Dick Newbourne’s house ‘Humber View’ (mentioned elsewhere in this section) is on the bank to the right, and the picture is taken close to Teal’s shop.

And in case you were thinking it ... Yes, on one occasion the number 1 did come unscrewed from his uniform, and so for a short while he really was PC 49 !
