Winteringham platelaying gang

Here’s a platelaying gang on the railway at Winteringham.  The portly figure of Fred Hawkins is in the centre of the back line.

Winteringham Railway Station

Winteringham Railway Station

The same photograph appears on the Railway Station page - though this is Marjorie’s version and of a higher quality.  On this photo, the words over the door facing the camera are “Goods Stores”.  The station name board has been moved from its original position on the platform directly visible, and to a position between the two platforms, so that trains to Whitton can see it too (the Whitton platform was in the angle formed by the junction).  The universal station handcart is to the extreme right.  Though we can’t see the hands on the station clock, we know from the direction of the shadows that it’s about noon, on a glorious Winteringham day as the two men await the next burst of activity amid smoke and steam, hissing and splashing.
